Parking lot access control systems work by preventing unauthorized individuals or vehicles from entering the parking lot. Depending on the type of facility or parking space, a parking lot access control system may have different features and functions. But most have two main components: a parking door and an access control reader. When the voucher is presented to the reader, the parking lot gate control system sends data through the control panel to authorize the voucher. The control panel then communicates with the parking door security system to trigger unlocking and the gate opens.

There are several different types of vehicle access doors to choose. For open parking lots, stronger gate security systems and fences may be required to prevent people from walking around or under gates. This type of parking lot system is more common in high-security facilities and commercial offices. Many garage access systems use rolling or vertical doors for parking access control. This type of garage security system door is very common in multifamily buildings that provide controlled parking garages for residents. However, for large public garages or parking lots, you're more likely to encounter a parking lot entry and exit access control system paired with a straight arm or a folding parking door arm. These can be opened and closed faster to keep traffic through the parking lot security system.
